2018 Science and Engineering Fair Winners

On Thursday, March 29, 2018, Douglas Middle School held its 8th annual Science and Engineering Fair. 145 students participated, entering 50 projects, which were judged by 35 judges from Athena Diagnostics, Atlas Global Solutions, Douglas Elementary School, Douglas High School, First Congregational Church, General Dynamics, Lincoln Middle School, Northbridge Middle School, Quest Diagnostics, Raytheon, Saint Anselm College, Sumtotal, and Worcester State University.


The top 5 projects from the entire 6th grade were:


1st Place

*Ashley Arnold, Olivia DeLuca, and Maia Tyra: Store-Bought Filters vs. Natural Filters

2nd Place

*William George, William Hogan, and Ethan Vassar: Measuring Surface Tension of Water with a Penny

3rd Place

*Ethan Chisholm, Louis Makela, and Grace Parker: Coloring Carnations

Honorable Mention:

*Christopher Dame, Matthew Doyle, Owen Gray, and Gavin Gualtieri: Crystal Chemistry

*Laney Beahn, Erika Our, and Cecelia White: How Well Do Different Materials Create Static Electricity?


21 7th and 8th grade students presented projects that they worked on outside of school. The top 5 projects were:

*Brianna Taylor: Chloroplasts and Salty Cells: Effects of Rising Oceans on Freshwater Plants

3rd Place

*Jordan Provost and Arianna Sacco: Juice Balls: The Science of Spherification

*Zoey Beahn and Mackenzie Gray: iPad vs. Paper


All projects that earned awards are eligible to participate in the Worcester Regional Middle School Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held on Monday, April, 30 at WPI.
