Get Ready — The American Heart Challenge is Coming to DMS! ❤️💪
Douglas Middle School Families,
We’re excited to announce that the American Heart Association’s American Heart Challenge (AHC) is coming to Douglas Middle School — and it all kicks off with a special assembly on Tuesday, September 30th at 5:00 PM!
Students can SIGN UP today under our school at http://www2.heart.org/goto/douglasmiddle.
By joining the American Heart Challenge, students will:
Raise awareness and funds for congenital heart defects, nutrition security, CPR training, mental well-being, and more.
Meet some of the kids they’re helping.
Learn about heart-healthy habits for both the mind and body.
Take on Finn’s Mission and even learn the lifesaving steps of Hands-Only CPR — quick, easy, and fun for the whole family!
🎉 Incentives & Prizes!
The homeroom with the most students signed up will win an Amazon gift card + a recess bag.
If 50% or more of our students sign up, those who complete the challenge will get the chance to silly string the Mr. O'Brien (or some brave volunteer teachers!).
Let’s work together to build a community of lifesavers and keep hearts everywhere beating strong!

Dear Douglas Middle School Families,
We are excited to announce an important change for the 2025–2026 school year: Douglas Middle School is moving to a 1:1 Chromebook program!
This means that every student will be assigned their own school-issued Chromebook to use for learning both in school and at home. Below are the key expectations and procedures for all students and families:
✅ Student Responsibilities
Bring the Chromebook home every day and return with it the next school day.
Charge the Chromebook nightly so it is ready for a full day of school use.
Take care of the device as you would a textbook. The Chromebook is school property, and students may be held responsible for intentional damage or misuse.
🔄 Loaners & Repairs
If a Chromebook is forgotten at home, students must visit the Technology Office to borrow a loaner for the day.
If a Chromebook is damaged at home, students should bring it to the Technology Office the next day. A loaner will be issued until repairs are complete.
If a Chromebook needs charging during the day, students may borrow a charger from the Technology Office or leave the Chromebook there to charge and use a temporary loaner.
🚫 Important Reminder
Students may not borrow or use another student’s or staff member’s Chromebook. They should only use their assigned device or an official loaner.
📘 Chromebook Care & Use Guide
To participate in the program, both parents/guardians and students must sign the Chromebook Care & Use Guide within the first week of school.
If we do not receive a signed copy, the Chromebook will be disabled until the form is submitted.
The guide is available on the public portal for both students and parents. Simply log into the portal and click on "Forms" on the left hand side and then click on "District Chromebook Use Agreement" to sign and submit it.
This new approach encourages responsibility and accountability while preparing students for high school, where the same expectations apply.
If you have any questions, please contact the Technology Office at parentportal@douglasps.net or reach out to the school office.
We look forward to a successful school year with this exciting new initiative!

As a wrap up on their scientific inquiry unit last week, 7th grade students in science collaborated to investigate how the number of spaghetti strands affects how many pennies can be held before breaking.

🌍💚 World Mental Health Day | October 10th 💚🌍
Today, we join the Mental Health Foundation in raising awareness for World Mental Health Day. This year’s message reminds us that everyone deserves good mental health — and that caring for our minds is just as important as caring for our bodies.
📱 It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by constant news and social media.
Take a moment today to:
✨ Turn off push notifications
✨ Set phone-free times
✨ Talk with others
✨ Focus on what you can control
✨ Give yourself permission to rest
Let’s take small steps to protect our wellbeing and support one another — today and every day. 💚

We are having a great time at the middle school's 2025-2026 Open House! Pictured here is our amazing DMS & DHS guidance staff.

Tomorrow, September 16, 2025 is school photo day. Even if your child did not submit their form, we will still be able to accommodate them. Thank you.

Today, with the assistance of the Douglas Police Department, the middle school completed a very successful lock down drill. I would like to thanks the students, staff, and Officer Wright and Officer Fulone for their work in keeping our school safe.
If you have any questions, or if your child shares anything with you that you would like brought to our attention, please feel free to email me at bobrien@douglasps.net.

In July, the School Committee, members of the leadership team, and representatives from the DTA and DESPA came together to help develop the School Committee’s value and belief statements. We prioritized the following areas: academic excellence, social and emotional well-being, professional culture, family and community engagement, operations, and fiscal responsibility.
Through our work, we developed value and belief statements for each of these focus areas, along with action steps to guide progress toward our objectives. Over the course of the school year, we will concentrate on many of these steps to help move the district forward and ensure student success. While these action items will take more than a year to fully accomplish, they will serve as a roadmap for our ongoing work.
I am grateful to the members of the School Committee, the leadership team, and our educators who dedicated time during the summer to participate in this effort. It was a thoughtful, engaging, and collaborative process that reflects our shared commitment to the success of every student.
