Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to share that Douglas Middle School Counseling Department is launching the Tiger Traits Initiative, a school wide social-emotional learning (SEL) framework designed to support students’ well-being, growth, and success. This initiative builds on the excellent SEL foundation from Douglas Elementary School and strengthens continuity as students transition to middle school.
About Tiger Traits: Tiger Traits are skills and behaviors that help students:
- Treat others with respect
- Handle emotions and challenges
- Work collaboratively
- Solve problems and persevere
Each month, we focus on a specific Tiger Trait. Staff will highlight the trait in classrooms, morning announcements, and school wide activities to help students practice and internalize these skills.
March Focus: Growth Mindset
Our first month focuses on Growth Mindset, which encourages students to see challenges as opportunities to learn and improve. Growth Mindset helps students:
- Persist even when something is difficult
- Learn from mistakes rather than getting discouraged
- Celebrate effort, progress, and problem-solving
- Recognize that challenges help them grow
How You Can Support at Home:
- Encourage your child to use phrases like, “I can’t do it…yet!” when faced with a challenge
- Celebrate effort and progress, not just outcomes
- Support them in trying new strategies or approaches when something feels difficult
- Discuss challenges as opportunities for growth
We hope that by working together, we can make Tiger Traits a meaningful part of your child’s school experience. Thank you for supporting your child as we practice Growth Mindset and build a positive, supportive Tiger community.

Good morning everyone,
This is the DMS Counseling Department and today is the first day of National School Counseling Week. The theme this year is School Counselors Amplify Student Success.
Did you know that a big part of our
job is to help you set goals, stay motivated and find strategies that work for
you? Success begins with confidence and determination. Whether it’s academics, friendships or planning for your future, we're here to support you every step of the way.
As Kendrick Lamar says in his song “i,” “Keep your head up.” You have what it takes to succeed. If you ever need help or just
want to talk, come see us!
By the way, because our theme includes the
word “amplify,” we will be sharing song lyrics all week. If you see us around, tell us
about a song lyric that inspires you. Let’s make this a great week.
Best,
Your DMS Counseling Department
